COVERS & PAGES 33. 1900 -1909
20TH CENTURY MAGAZINES

Welcome to the twentieth century. This version of our Covers & Pages section highlights the magazines started in the years 1900 to 1909. We present here five of the most exciting magazines of that decade. Four are American, one is British. We are looking at American Magazine, Collier's, Connoisseur, House and Garden, and Vogue. Although all five were popular, significant publications, only two of them made it to the twenty-first century - House and Garden and Vogue, both Conde Nast magazines. And only one, Vogue, is still being published and in print. All five presented exciting graphics, using the top illustrators of their time. All five showed a gradually increasing use of photographic reproductions. These five shining examples of early 20th century publishing were quite visually exciting. Check them out.

﷯ AMERICAN MAGAZINE.US.1905SEP-1956DEC. The American Magazine was probably the most popular of a long list of publications with that title in America's past. We count at least twelve others. The American was a descendant of Frank Leslie's popular magazine, starting out as a muckracking ("progressive democracy") journal. It quickly became the mirror of the lifestyles of the average American. After being purchased by Crowell Publishing in 1906, the American gradually changed to more of a journal of men's interests with "inspirational biographies of well-known men". We highlight here some of the best graphics of what was a very long-lived, meaningful reflection of American culture.

﷯ COLLIER'S MAGAZINE.US.1888-1905-1957. Collier's was a weekly publication, started by P.F. Pat Collier as "Once a Week" in February 1888, and changing to "Collier's Weekly" in 1895, then shortened to "Collier's" in 1905. Collier's became one of the most successful magazines of the early Twentieth Century. A leader in the new era of color illustration, Collier's employed the best photographers and illustrators of its time. Artists like Maxfield Parrish, Edward Penfield, Frederic Remington, Howard Chandler Christy, and more appeared in its pages and on its covers. Collier's became famous for using the work of one of those artists, Charles Dana Gibson, who created his "Gibson Girl" in its pages. Collier's was an important part of publishing in the first half of the Twentieth Century. Together with the Saturday Evening Post, these two magazines not only represented the best of American magazines, they were America!

﷯ CONNOISSEUR. UK & US. 1901SEP-1992FEB. For most of the 20th century The Connoisseur was the class act of the art collector's world. It had roots going back to 1754, when the first Connoisseur was started. Although the monthly Connoisseur was published in both London and New York, we are looking at only the British version here. Most outstanding of the early Connoisseur is its diversity of subject matter and the column headings for those subjects. For Connoisseur, art not only meant drawing and painting, but also printing arts, collectibles, and household items. Connoisseur represented all of these arts with dignity and enthusiasm for over ninety years.

﷯ HOUSE & GARDEN. US.1901-1993/1996-2007. House and Garden was originally an architecture magazine, started by three Philadelphia architects. The subject matter covered, not only domestic architecture, but also public architecture, arts, gardening, and city planning. The first few years saw mostly black and white drawings, and average quality photographic reproductions, with very little color in its pages. The number of color pages gradually increased as did the quality of its reproductions. The magazine became Conde Nast property in 1915, and gradually changed to more of an interior design publication. House and Garden enjoyed a long, significant life of 90 plus years.

﷯ VOGUE. US. 1892-1909/1909-PRESENT. Vogue in it's infancy, before Conde Nast took over, was a well-printed and handsome ten cent weekly. As Luther Mott states in his book on the history of American Magazines, "Vogue set out to be a dignified, authentic journal of society, fashion and the ceremonial side of life." Mott further states, "this was not merely another journal devoted to ladies fashion, but a modest and respectable periodical filled with news and notes about fashionable New York. It was clearly of a high class of excellence". We are cheating a little by viewing Vogue here in the first decade of the 2oth century. Vogue did exist before 1900, but the Vogue we now know as the Conde Nast Vogue did not exist until 1909. Vogue today is all about women's fashions. Before 1909, Vogue was more of a society magazine. However, Vogue in those years was very much a visually exciting publication, with art work by Harry McVickar, A.I. Keller,Max Klepper,Will Bradley, and others.
