This version of our Covers & Pages section highlights children's magazines. Part 1 covers children's magazines started in the 19th century.   Children's magazines of the 19th century, like  most magazines of that time, were relatively limited compared to those that came later. They were limited in their use of full color, and limited in their use of quality photo reproduction. They were not limited, however in their use of the printed word. Children's magazines had as much to say, as much to offer, young readers as in any time period. Unfortunately, most children's magazines were hampered in one important way- they were printed more for parents, rather than for their children. The focus of many children's magazines was more on what the parents wanted for their children, rather than on what might interest the children most. These nine examples of children's magazines had a lot to offer young readers.  Best of these nine was undoubtedly St. Nicholas, which offered its readers a great deal in the way of education and entertainment. We proudly present here nine very exciting and important examples of children's magazines. Check them out.

YOUTH'S COMPANION.1828MAY30.v2#1.

﷯ YOUTH'S COMPANION. US. 1827 - 1929. The Youth's Companion magazine was founded by Nathaniel Willis in Boston. It was a weekly tabloid format, with large pages of 11 by 16.5 inches. Like most magazines of the time, the Companion had few images in each issue for most of the century. And like most of the children's magazines of the 19th century, the magazine seemed to offer more for adults, rather than for children. The magazine presented articles on entertainment and culture with a strong religious attitude. The Companion was an important magazine, but it lacked a certain level of visual sophistication. There were very little large images or color on editorial pages. But it must have been doing something right. The Youth's Companion lasted over a hundred years. It was merged into the American Boy in 1929.

CHATTERBOX.FRANK LESLIE'S.

DATE UNKNOWN.

﷯ CHATTERBOX. UK & US. 1866 - c1956. Chatterbox, sometimes known as Frank Leslie's Chatterbox, was a lovely children's magazine, published in both London and Boston. Although the magazine made the unpardonable mistake of not showing illustrator's credits, it did make use of a great deal of very good quality artwork. The Chatterbox started as a weekly, and later combined the weekly with a monthly edition, and eventually publishing only an annual edition. This long lived periodical had many publishers - Macintosh, W.W. Gardner, Estes & Lauriat, D.Appleton, Dana Estes, L.C. Page, C.H.Simonds, Leon Co., maybe more. You know that a magazine is meaningful if it lasts as long as the Chatterbox, with as many publishers. It's subject matter was the usual 19th Century fare of history and culture with an emphases on religious thinking. In its various forms, the Chatterbox lasted for almost a hundred years.

﷯ LITTLE FOLKS.#1.CHICAGO.1869-1877. There have been at least three separate Little Folks magazines that we know of. We have added the numbers 1, 2, and 3 to differentiate between them. Little Folks #1 was a short-lived monthly from Adams Blackmer and Lyon publishers in Chicago. Little Folks #1 lasted only 9 years. Hence, we have found very little to show visually of Little Folks #1.

﷯ LITTLE FOLKS.#2. LONDON, PARIS, & NEW YORK.1871JAN - 1933FEB. Little Folks #2 was a weekly and monthly, published at various times in London, Paris, Melbourne, and New York. Little Folks magazine was founded in London by John Cassell in January 1871. The publishers soon became Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, reverting back to Cassell & Company in 1883. The American version of the magazine was published by the American News Company. This second version of the Little Folks title was probably the better of the three, lasting sixty two years. It was also the most visually exciting of the three, making use of well known and not-so-well known artists of the time. Some of the better known illustrators included Harry B. Neilson,E.Dorothy Rees, John Campbell, and Harry Rountree. Cassell's Little Folks magazine was a successful, exciting, joy and learning tool for children on three continents.

﷯ LITTLE FOLKS.#3.BOSTON.1897NOV-1926FEB. Little Folks #3 was published monthly by S.E. Cassino Company in Boston. Little Folks #3 was in print for 29 years from 1897 to 1926. It was then incorporated into Junior Home Magazine. The Boston magazine used some very nice artwork by artists like Edith F. Butler, Florence White Williams,Violet Moore Higgins,Lou Rogers,George R. Brill, and Esther P. Hill. It did not, however, show the works of the more successful illustrators of the day. The Boston-Cassino Little Folks was a lovely little magazine, but it did not have the lasting power of the London-New York-Cassell Little Folks, nor did it have the graphic power and visual sophistication of the Cassell magazine.

ST. NICHOLAS. US. ENGLISH & FRENCH EDITIONS. 1873NOV-1943JUN. When it comes to children's magazines, no other magazine comes close to St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was the cream of the crop for children's magazines for the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There were several reasons for this dominance. Of utmost significance was Scribner's hiring of Mary Mapes Dodge, in the beginning, as editor, and her continued contributions for thirty-two years. Also of importance, was Scribner's and Mrs. Dodge's insistence that their magazine be strictly in the interest of its readers- the children. Most children's magazines of the 19th century seemed to be more for the parents than for the children. Not only did St. Nicholas make sure the content was of interest to the children, they also had the brilliance to make sure they included readers' contributions in art and writing. Also of importance was the quality of contributions by well known writers and dignitaries. A few of these contributors were: Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, Louisa May Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Walter Camp, and many more. Also contributing to the dominance of St. Nicholas, was the progressive use of superior illustrators. Among its many illustrators were Reginald Birch, Fanny Y. Cory, T. Guernsey Moore, Maxfield Parrish, Herbert Paus, Norman Price, Howard Pyle, Arthur Rakham, Charles M. Relyea, Norman "P." Rockwell, Penrhyn Stanlaws, Jessie Wilcox Smith, George Varian, Albertine R. Wheelan, Eugene Wireman, and many more. For seventy years, St. Nicholas was a jewel of a magazine and a treasure for its young readers.

PHOTO-BASSANO.

﷯ HARPER'S YOUNG PEOPLE.US.1879-1895. HARPER'S ROUND TABLE. US.1895-1899. The Harper Brother's magazine for children was a typical 19th century publication. It was informative and entertaining, but it lacked the sophisticated graphics, full color printing, mature artwork, or improved printing quality of later magazines. Harper's Young People was a weekly publication that lasted sixteen years. Harper Brothers changed the name to Round Table in 1895, and eventually turning the weekly into a monthly. The new publication lasted only another four years. Harper's version of a magazine for children was just not destined to make it into the 20th century. Harper's Young People and Round Table was a good magazine, fairly well-done. But where the Harper's magazine failed was in its basic understanding of the main significance of a children's periodical, namely that the focus of the magazine must be toward its young readers. Unlike the St. Nicholas magazine, the Harper's version was more for the parents, rather than for the children.

BOUND COVER.

﷯ ATALANTA.UK.1887OCT-1898SEP. Atalanta was a lovely British magazine for young girls, subtitled "The Victorian Magazine". It was founded by L.T. Meade as a successor to Every Girl's Magazine. Atalanta printed fiction in the form of short stories and serials. Also included in its pages, were articles of interest for young girls on a wide variety of subjects like medicine, history, arts. The editors also included articles intending to aid its young readers in reaching further career goals, such as medicine, civil service, and office skills. Atalanta also included superior artwork from both fine art painters and current illustrators. Atalanta provided quality reading and information for girls for eleven years. But where the magazine failed, as did many nineteenth century magazines, was in its insistance on focusing more on parents of children rather than the children themselves. Also, like most magazines of its time, the magazine could have used some color on its pages. That being said, Atalanta was a beautiful brief candle for young girls of its time.
