DATABANK 14. 1885-1899

This month’s subjects for the Data Bank and Gallery pages are the magazines of the 19th Century, years 1885 to 1899. Until the 1880’s only the upper classes read magazines. Gradually toward the end of the 19th Century, more and more people began to purchase and read magazines. This was due to, not only the lowering of prices, but also to the rise in numbers of the middle class. The lowering of magazine prices can be attributed to at least two main factors- the creation in America by Congress of second class mail, in 1879, and magazine world’s ever-increasing inclusion of advertising pages. Mass market magazines came to depend on advertising to survive. Advertising not only brought in revenue for the magazines, but also allowed publishers to lower the cover charges of its magazines
